LovefilmWhen we plan which sub-genre of horror we want to create, we think it would be a good idea to look at what is currently popular.
Renting DVDs has recently become more favoured than buying, as it is often cheaper and you can watch more movies for your money. Therefore, we decided it is logical to also look at which DVDs are being rented as well as horror movies which are being bought. On of the leading DVD renting sites is LoveFilm, so we decided to check out which horror movies are being rented out, but more importantly, what sub-genre they fit into. |
What's popular
From this research, we found out that World War Z - 2013 is currently the most popular horror on Amazon's Lovefilm. This film is of the zombie sub-genre, however we have opted to stay away from this type of film despite its popularity. Zombie films often require quality computer generated effects and make up we feel we wouldn't be able to pull off, however we think this shows there is a gap in the market for our chosen sub-genre, slasher.
Also included in the top rented films are The Twilight Saga - Breaking Dawn - Part 2 - 2012, The Purge - 2013, The Conjuring - 2013 and The Woman in Black - 2012.
The Twilight Saga - Breaking Dawn - Part 2 - 2012 is a vampire romance with some werewolves thrown in, again a sub-genre which would require a lot of complicated computer generate effects. We also thought there wasn't much else that could be done in the sub-genre without copying other story lines.
The Purge - 2013 is of the slasher sub-genre, a type of film which is generally easier to create as the main props needed are fake blood and an iconic weapon, both easily accessible. Slashers also offer many opportunities for dynamic story lines, a necessary trait we believe our horror trailer should have.
