Shot Lengths
In groups, we looked at different trailers to decipher their number of shots and lengths. We placed our results together to work out an average. This research will help us on see how many shots we will need to include in our trailer to make it look as professional and well put together as possible.
The Amityville Horror - 2005
|
Number of Shots: 67
Average Length: 2s This trailer had 67 shots in which was more then the average of our results. This created a very fast paced effect and the story is very detailed and so to show enough to entice an audience into watching, they need to show a variety of details from said story. This trailer is 2 minutes and 31 seconds (151 seconds) which allows the makers to show their characters and perhaps also the antagonist. This helps the audience understand what the film is about and so they can judge whether they would like to see it or not. On average, the shots were 2 seconds long, which creates a fast paced effect when watching. |
[Rec] 4: Apocalypse - 2013
Number of Shots: 36
Average Length: 2s This had less shots then the average of our results. This is because they didn't want to give too much away so that the storyline would appeal to a larger audience as it's not specific. This means the audience will want to watch it because they want to know what happens next. Most the clips are all fairly quick because they want the audience to be anticipating what is going to happen next and encourage them to go and see the film. Again the average shot length is 2 seconds and so is quite quick and fast paced making the audience feel on edge whilst watching this trailer. |

The Purge: Anarchy - 2014
|
Number of Shots: 69
Average Length: 1.3s This was more then the average of our results. The reasons why they had so many shots is because they want to show the different locations used with all the characters in it. This encourages the audience to watch as the will likely identify with someone in the trailer. This film is all about surviving and that means a lot of the survivors will be doing a lot of actions such as running and reloading weapons. They wanted to recreate this atmosphere in the trailer so that it will appeal to both fans of horror, and fans of thriller/actions films. This is also reflected in the low average length of shots. |
The Quiet Ones - 2014
Number of Shots: 43
Average Length: 3 This had less then the average of our results. This makes the audience want to know more about the story. There is also a good contrast between the bright sunshine and abandoned house with very dark colours. There were also many fast paced clips of torturing so what scared you more is what you thought you saw, rather than what was actually on the screen which I found very effective. At the very end there are many clips of the possessed girl with a demon coming out of her which encourages the audience to find out what happens in the film. The longer average shot length also makes it feel very eerie. |

COnclusion:
Average Number of Shots: 50
Average Length: 2s
From this research, we have decided most our clips should be around 2 seconds long in order to achieve the same pace as real trailers and we should aim to have at least 50 clips so that we can show enough of the storyline so that it is enticing, but also so that it doesn't give too much away.
